Trieste, Yugoslavia

Movie

In the 1960s, while Europe was divided by the Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain, Trieste saw a unique opening. In 1962, 2.6 million people crossed the Yugoslav-Italian border; by 1969, that number soared to 58 million, driven by economic motives. Italians sought cheaper fuel and food in Yugoslavia, while Yugoslavs flocked to Italy for goods they lacked at home, especially on Saturdays.
